Conventional prostate high-dose-rate brachytherapy (HDR BT) is usually performed using straight needles which requires a large number of needles (15-20), along with difficulties to meet the dose constraints. We developed active needles in our lab for HDR BT which can curve to conform to the shape of the prostate to improve dosimetric coverage while significantly reducing the number of needles needed for effective treatment. In collaboration with SUNY, we were generously allowed access to their medical imaging facility. This partnership allows us to achieve optimal imaging, facilitating real-time adjustments and improved outcomes in HDR prostate brachytherapy procedures.
